The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, has called for an end to hostilities in the Middle East. The Swiss Mission to the UN Security Council once again called for a ceasefire in Gaza and regional de-escalation.
Respect for human rights and the safety of the civilian population must have absolute priority after the conclusion of the UN General Assembly, Berset wrote on the short message service X on Saturday night. What is happening in the Middle East is deeply worrying, wrote the former Federal Councillor.
According to the Swiss representation to the UN Security Council, it once again stood up for the protection of the civilian population before the Council. This also includes the humanitarian personnel of the United Nations. Access for humanitarian aid must be safe and unhindered. The Swiss representation also called for the release of all hostages, as it announced on X.
Last week, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Viola Amherd, expressed her concern at the United Nations General Assembly. Violations of international humanitarian law are increasing and Security Council resolutions are not being implemented. Switzerland takes over the chairmanship of the UN Security Council in New York for the second time on Tuesday.
