Block 2 of the Beznau nuclear power plant (KKB) in the canton of Aargau was taken off the grid on Tuesday for a refueling. The work will take around two weeks.
The energy company Axpo announced on Tuesday that 20 of the 121 fuel elements in the reactor core would be replaced. In addition, recurring inspection work and system tests will be carried out.
Around 150 external specialists supported the approximately 500 KKB employees. According to Axpo, Block 2 was previously in continuous operation for 329 operating days.
According to Axpo, the steam that rises above the nacelle during the shutdown of the plant poses no danger to people or the environment. The refuelling process is under the supervision of the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (Ensi).
