The Bourbaki Panorama Foundation in Lucerne has planned a major restoration project in January 2024. The museum will therefore be closed to the public from January 8 to February 16.
The plan is to perfect the three-dimensional effect of the historical illusion medium and adapt its sustainability to contemporary standards, as detailed in the press release issued by Bourbaki on Tuesday. Furthermore, the so-called "optical apparatus", which rises sky-like above the viewing platform, is to be replaced.
This is a relatively complex matter, as Brigitte Heinrich, media coordinator of Bourbaki, announced at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. The exact scope of the renovation project will be announced in detail at the beginning of January. According to the press release, however, this is the largest restoration project since the total renovation of the painting and building 30 years ago.
The Bourbaki Panorama, painted by Edouard Castres in 1881, is considered a European cultural monument. It is intended to commemorate the internment of 87,000 French soldiers who found refuge in Switzerland in the winter of 1871, according to the press release.
