Shortly after selling his jewelry and watch chain to Rolex, Jörg Bucherer has died. The 87-year-old passed away on Monday evening, as the company confirmed a report in the "Handelszeitung" newspaper on Tuesday at the request of the news agency AWP.
Bucherer was the third generation to run the Lucerne-based family business. He took over the business from his father in 1977 and led an expansion course, initially into Austria and Germany.
He opened the world's largest watch and jewelry store in Paris, made acquisitions in the UK and the USA and gained a foothold in New York, for example. He also entered the second-hand luxury watch trade. Today, Bucherer has more than one hundred jewelry stores worldwide and claims to have 2,400 employees.
The head office on Schwanenplatz in Lucerne is also a tourist magnet. It benefited from the coach stop located directly in front of the store. During the coronavirus pandemic, Bucherer was hit hard by the crisis in tourism and had to cut jobs.
Little is known about the patron Jörg Bucherer. He had no direct descendants. He therefore sold the company to luxury watch manufacturer Rolex in August 2023. Bucherer had been selling Rolex products since 1924 and the brand, which was still unknown at the time, became the family company's most important partner.
