The solar park project in the Valais municipality of Gondo is one step closer. The promoters submitted a building permit application to the cantonal building commission on Wednesday, as they announced on Thursday.

It is the first alpine solar park project in Valais to take this step. The promoters hope that they will be granted planning permission in the middle of next year.

If this is the case, the project would fulfill the conditions of the Federal Solar Energy Act. It would then be entitled to federal subsidies of up to 60 percent of the investment if the park is able to feed at least part of the electricity into the grid by the end of 2025 in compliance with the standard procedure.

The plant is to be built above the municipality of Gondo at an altitude of over 2000 meters on an area of 17.4 hectares. According to the project promoters, it will produce an average of around 22.1 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity per year.

Last summer, the promoters, the municipality of Zwischbergen, Energie Electriques du Simplon (EES) and a private entrepreneur, submitted the dossier to the building commission for preliminary consultation. "Based on this preliminary review, Gondosolar received valuable feedback. This was incorporated into the final dossier, which was submitted before Christmas as planned," emphasize the project sponsors.

In August 2022, Mountain Wilderness Switzerland held a protest camp to protest against the "Gondosolar" project and for a "wilderness-friendly energy transition". For the association, the energy transition must take place, but not "at the expense of the country's last undeveloped areas".
