The caf? crème at your favorite café around the corner costs more in German-speaking Switzerland than ever before. The price of the classic drink rose by a record 10 centimes in the current year 2023, and the price is likely to rise by a further 5 to 15 percent in the coming year.

Specifically, the price of a café crème in German-speaking Switzerland rose by 10 centimes or just under 3 percent to 4.49 francs. "This is the highest price increase in the last ten years," said Hans-Peter Oettli, President of the CafetierSuisse interest group, at a media conference on Monday.

Over ten years, the German-speaking Swiss have even paid 8.7% or 36 centimes more. In 2013, the average price for a café crème was still CHF 4.13. The figures are based on a telephone survey by CafetierSuisse of 650 cafés, cafeterias, café-bakeries and café-bistros in German-speaking Switzerland.

Zurich remains front runner

Once again, café crème will cost the most in the city of Zurich. Zurich residents will pay an average of CHF 4.78 for a cup in 2023. This is 6.4 percent higher than the average price in German-speaking Switzerland. It is followed by the cantons of Zug (CHF 4.66), St. Gallen (CHF 4.46), Aargau (CHF 4.40) and Bern (CHF 4.35).

The most expensive café crème also comes from the canton of Zurich. With a maximum price of CHF 6.50 for a cup in the city of Zurich, the city on the Limmat also leads the rankings in this category.

Significant price increase in 2024

Coffee is likely to become significantly more expensive again next year. The association expects the price of café crème to rise by 5 to 15 percent. "Given the current economic situation, further price increases cannot be ruled out," explained Oettli.

The reasons for this include higher personnel and ancillary costs. At the same time, CafetierSuisse emphasizes the large differences within the industry. Pricing is a decision for each individual business. The price calculation depends on the competitive situation, the concept and the location of the business.
