Canton of Basel-Landschaft warns of toxic cloud in Schweizerhalle BL

On Friday evening, potentially toxic substances were released into the environment in Schweizerhalle near Basel. This was announced by the canton of Basel-Landschaft in the evening on the Alertswiss website of the Federal Office for Civil Protection.
On this website, the canton of Basel-Landschaft calls on the population to close windows and doors and turn off ventilation and air conditioning systems.
When asked, a spokesperson for the Basel-Landschaft cantonal police said that a cloud had been detected. However, there was no fire. There were no injuries. The fire department and police were on site. The warning had been issued as a precaution.
In 1991, a chemical disaster occurred in Schweizerhalle BL. A fire broke out in a warehouse belonging to the chemical company Sandoz and spread rapidly.
Over 1000 tons of various chemicals burned, around 20 tons of which flowed into the Rhine with the extinguishing water, turning it red. The following day, only dead fish were recovered from the river.
