In the canton of Schaffhausen, there have been three deaths of dogs in the past few days that most likely became poisoned with blue-green algae while bathing. The veterinary office warns dog owners not to let their animals bathe in murky water.
The Schaffhausen Veterinary Office has been notified of various cases of dogs suffering from severe vomiting, diarrhea and tremors after bathing in natural bodies of water, the office announced on Thursday. The affected animals had most likely been poisoned with blue-green algae.
The current high temperatures promote the proliferation of blue-green algae. High concentrations occur mainly in calm waters. However, there are also places in flowing waters such as the Rhine or in streams where they can multiply.
Less danger for people
The Veterinary Office advises dog owners not to allow their pets to drink or bathe if algae accumulates in the water or if the water is cloudy and discolored. Flakes, streaks or a greasy film on the surface of the water can also indicate blue-green algae.
If it is suspected that a dog may have come into contact with the blue-green algae bloom, its coat should be washed. This will prevent the dog from ingesting the algae by licking the coat.
Even if the danger for humans is lower than for dogs, bathers should also be careful, especially in stagnant areas or in areas with algae accumulations or murky water.
