The canton of Uri has budgeted a deficit of CHF 11.2 million for the coming year. With this result, it is just within the debt brake. In order to return to a balanced budget in the medium term, the canton has already implemented initial cost-cutting measures.

Around two million francs have already been saved with measures taken in the previous year, the Uri government announced on Thursday. In addition, the first measures from the report on a sustainable financial budget from 2024 have been implemented in the 2025 budget.

Expenses for the Uri state budget will rise to CHF 474 million in the coming year. This is around CHF 5 million more than in the previous year. Uri is also expecting higher revenue figures. These will increase by CHF 7.3 million to CHF 463 million in 2025 compared to 2024.

The government expects lower income from the Amsteg and Wassen energy procurement rights in the 2025 budget, according to a statement. However, the losses can be compensated for with new income from the Lucendro concession and the upcoming exchange of National Bank notes in the coming year. The government also anticipates an increase in the largest income items, taxes and the federal resource equalization.

16 million invested in road construction

Net investments of around 33 million francs are expected. This is back in line with the long-term average, according to the press release. The largest investment items include road construction, the Uri cantonal hospital and the investment in Kraftwerk Meiental AG.

Net debt is expected to be CHF 175 million at the end of 2025. In the previous year, it was 152 million francs. According to the government, debt is continuing to rise. This makes the project to develop the package of measures all the more important. The project was launched on October 2.

The government considers the result to be "justifiable", as it wrote in the press release. However, a further 11.2 million francs were needed to return to a balanced result.

The 2023 accounts of the canton of Uri closed with a deficit of CHF 20.5 million. A minus of CHF 12.3 million was budgeted. The reasons for the result included the lack of profit distribution from the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and lower income from energy purchase rights.
