With the return of summer temperatures, the risk of the spread of blue-green algae in bodies of water and around lakes has increased. The canton of Vaud issued a warning and prevention tips to protect small children and animals.
Following the death of a dog that had been swimming in the municipality of Villeneuve VD last week, the microbiology laboratory of the University of Neuchâtel ordered an investigation of the affected water.
It turned out that toxic cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, were present at the mouth of the Eau Froide stream, as the canton of Vaud announced on Wednesday. It was the type of cyanobacteria that has also been observed for several years at the mouth of the Areuse in Lake Neuchâtel.
To reduce the risk to humans and animals, the canton recommended that the municipality of Villeneuve restrict bathing at the mouth of the river.
Young children are more at risk
The canton also urged the population to exercise caution. The microorganisms that occur naturally in lakes and rivers develop differently depending on their habitat. Rising temperatures and high light intensity, for example, favor their rapid multiplication.
Some types of cyanobacteria produce toxins that could lead to death in pets if swallowed, the canton added. In humans, the symptoms varied and ranged from gastrointestinal problems to flu-like conditions or skin irritations.
The effects are usually harmless, but young children can be more severely affected as they run the risk of swallowing water while swimming. If you suspect poisoning, you should contact a doctor, the canton further advises. In addition, animals should not be allowed to bathe or drink water.
