Following the discovery of a dead mute swan with bird flu in Kleinandelfingen ZH, the canton of Zurich has issued measures to prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus. The measures affect owners of poultry in the vicinity of where the bird was found.

In consultation with the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO), the Veterinary Office of the Canton of Zurich has set up a control and observation area, as the FSVO wrote on the short message service X on Thursday.

A mute swan found dead at the turn of the year in the Oerlingerried area (municipality of Kleinandelfingen) tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Poultry farmers must now take various measures to ensure that there is no contact between wild birds and the poultry they keep in a radius of three kilometers around the site where the swan was found.

In order to prevent the introduction of the virus, the number of people who have access to the livestock must be limited to the bare minimum and a hygiene sluice must be set up. In the control area, which covers an area with a radius of one kilometer around the place where the virus was found, the animals may not be moved to another location.

According to an FSVO overview map, the discovery of the dead mute swan in Kleinandelfingen is the first case of an HPAI-positive wild bird in Switzerland since mid-October last year.
