Canton Valais investigates the abbey of Saint-Maurice

The public prosecutor's office and cantonal police of the canton of Valais are investigating cases of abuse by the Catholic Church in the Abbey of St. Maurice. On Wednesday and Thursday, the Attorney General and police inspectors visited the abbey for a preliminary investigation.
The abbey's archivist granted them access to the archives on a voluntary basis, the Valais cantonal police reported on Thursday. A canon was also consulted.
Following the publication of the study on sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, the Valais public prosecutor's office announced in mid-September that it would investigate possible criminal proceedings in Valais that are not time-barred or have already been dealt with. A report on the investigations should be available by the end of February 2024.
