Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis and EU Commissioner Maros Sefcovic held further telephone talks on Monday. They had already spoken on the phone on Saturday. Neither politician went into detail about the content of what was discussed.
"At this stage, every detail is important in order to reach a balanced agreement that will stabilize and further develop our bilateral relations," Cassis wrote on the online portal on Monday evening. There have been 200 rounds of negotiations so far. "The last ones are always the most difficult," Sefcovic wrote at the same time in a separate post on the same platform.
Switzerland has been negotiating with the EU for almost nine months in order to redefine the common relationship for the future. Existing agreements are to be updated and new ones concluded. The negotiations are expected to be concluded this week.
Last week, the Swiss media reported that all issues relating to the negotiations had been clarified except for the cohesion contribution. This would have to be clarified at a political level, i.e. between Cassis and Sefcovic. Several sources confirmed this information to the Keystone-SDA news agency.
