Following the substantive conclusion of the EU negotiations, the focus is now on concrete implementation. According to Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, domestic policy work in the areas of wage protection, immigration, electricity, land transport and tuition fees should be completed quickly.
The national government will make a final assessment before the summer break, Cassis told the media in Bern on Friday. At the moment, he expects to divide the joint dispatch into two parts: a stabilization part with the modernization of existing agreements and a further development part with new agreements.
"The Federal Council is convinced that the outcome of the negotiations represents a solid and effective basis." The package approach pursued has proven to be effective. The Swiss delegation has achieved the objectives set out in the negotiating mandate.
According to Cassis, there were almost 200 rounds of negotiations in 14 different areas. Six departments, more than twenty federal offices and over seventy experts were involved in the negotiations. The process was "broadly supported", said Cassis. The cantons and the social partners had been kept informed and involved on an ongoing basis. There had been "constructive support".
For 25 years, the bilateral approach has contributed significantly to Switzerland's success, said Cassis. "In order for it to continue to deliver its benefits, we need to develop it further." Especially in uncertain times, it is "crucial to have stable relations and legal foundations with our neighbors".
