The opposition sister parties CDU and CSU will take part in the German government's summit meeting on limiting irregular migration scheduled for 3.00 pm. This was announced in Berlin by Thorsten Frei (CDU), Parliamentary Secretary of the CDU/CSU members of the Bundestag.
"The cause is more important than how we get there," he added. "We're neither foaming at the mouth nor sitting in a corner."
The CDU and CSU had previously stated that they would only participate if the so-called "traffic light" government consisting of the SPD, Greens and FDP had a unified approach to limiting irregular migration, among other things. This did not yet appear to be the case on Tuesday morning, judging by statements from Green politicians, among others.
The poor election results of all governing parties in the eastern German states of Thuringia and Saxony at the beginning of September and the attack in Solingen, in which a Syrian allegedly stabbed three people and injured several others at the end of August, had increased the pressure on Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government to change course on migration policy.
On the main sticking point of the comprehensive rejection of asylum seekers at German borders demanded by the CDU and CSU, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser had informed them that the government had a corresponding view, Frei continued. However, the Union had not received this in writing. However, the Union would not refuse to talk in this situation. It would soon become clear at the meeting scheduled for 3 p.m. whether there was an agreed position of the traffic light government.
If this were not the case, it would not be the end of talks, said Frei. The Union had not issued an ultimatum here either. However, the format with the federal government and the federal states would then no longer make sense for the Union until the federal government had reached an agreed position.
After Green Party leader Omid Nouripour, for example, stated that he was not aware of the Federal Minister of the Interior's plans, he could not imagine that the traffic light coalition had already agreed on a position. Faeser had already announced border controls for all German borders on Monday, which are to begin on September 16. Details are still pending.
