Delphine Klopfenstein Broggini, National Councillor for the Greens in Geneva, is the new President of Pro Velo Switzerland. The organization's delegates elected her as the successor to SP politician Matthias Aebischer on Saturday.
The background to the change at the top of Pro Velo is Aebischer's election to the Bern city government last Sunday, as the organization announced. For the same reason, the former television journalist is also stepping down from his position as a member of the National Council after the winter session. He had been President of Pro Velo since 2017.
Following last Sunday's popular vote against the expansion of the highway, the cycling infrastructure must now be further expanded, said Klopfenstein Broggini at the meeting in Saint-Maurice in Lower Valais: "Our victory on November 24 also opens up completely new opportunities for cycling. We can now invest more in solutions that meet people's real needs."
Immediately after the result of the vote became known, Pro Velo called for more money for cycle paths and a stronger financial commitment from the federal government in this area.
Against "bicycle tax"
The Geneva National Councillor clearly rejected the idea of financing cycle paths through a levy on cyclists. The newspaper "Blick" reported on Thursday that the federal government was having the idea examined as part of a study.
According to Klopfenstein Broggini, it is only an idea so far. However, Pro Velo is strictly against it: "You get the impression that this is an act of revenge," said the newly elected president of Pro Velo.
Klopfenstein Broggini was previously Vice President of Pro Velo. The meeting elected Lucerne SP National Councillor Hasan Candan as the new Vice President. Former SP National Councillor and Bernese municipal councillor Ursula Wyss and Lukas von Wyl, Co-President of Pro Velo Luzern, were also newly elected to the organization's board.
