Around 4000 fans welcomed the winners of the Swiss Cup at the Stade de Genève on Sunday evening. The atmosphere at the celebration following Servette's victory over Lugano in Bern was exuberant and celebratory, as a reporter from Keystone-SDA reported.
To the sounds of Queen's "We Are The Champions", the Servette players took to the stage at 10.00 pm. The fans stood tightly packed in front of it and applauded their football heroes. Smoke bombs obscured the view.
The first victory in the Swiss Cup in 23 years sparked euphoria among the fans, as a reporter from the Keystone-SDA news agency observed. There was also disbelief at the way the game ended. Geneva beat Lugano 9:8 on penalties after 17:00 in a dramatic final. The score was 0:0 after 120 minutes.
Young and old wait for the team
The fan zone in Geneva opened around an hour after the final whistle. Children played football to pass the waiting time. Parents with their babies and children, teenagers and some older people waited for the club. Many wore the Servette colors. With the arrival of the fans who had watched the game on site in Bern, the crowd became denser and louder. Cars driving past the stadium honked their horns.
Finally, at 9.45 pm, fireworks were set off on the stadium grounds. Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for: The arrival of the team bus, which was broadcast on a screen and cheered loudly by the crowd of around 4000 people.
