Christian Vitta (FDP) was appointed as the new President of the Government in Bellinzona on Wednesday. The new Vice President is Norman Gobbi (Lega dei Ticinesi). Vitta succeeds Raffele De Rosa (Center Party).
Vitta was appointed as the new President of the Government at the ordinary government meeting on Wednesday, as announced by the Government Council. He will take over the presidency of the government in the second year of the 2023 to 2027 legislature.
Born in Locarno, Vitta was a member of the Ticino cantonal parliament from 2001 to 2015. He has been a member of the cantonal government since April 2015 and heads the Department of Finance and Economic Affairs.
Vitta was president of the cantonal government when the Covid pandemic broke out. On March 11, 2020, he was the first Swiss canton to declare a state of emergency in Ticino. Six days later, the national government applied emergency law for the whole of Switzerland.
