The city of Zurich wants to host the next Eurovision Song Contest (ESC): it is officially applying to host the event. This was announced by the city council on Thursday.
Zurich has the right infrastructure and attractive venues with the Hallenstadion with the exhibition center, the Landiwiese on Lake Zurich and the Kongresshaus, the city explained. The city council is requesting a framework credit of CHF 20 million from the municipal council for planning and implementation.
In addition to the city of Zurich, Geneva and Basel are also in the running. Bern - together with Nemo's home town of Biel - has also shown interest in hosting the event, and the final decision will also be announced today (Thursday).
The city in which the next ESC will take place will probably not be clear until September. The decision will be made by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG) together with SRF television and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
