Claude Barras from Valais has been nominated for a European Film Award for his animated film "Sauvages". The nominees also include "2720", a Portuguese-Swiss co-production among the short films.
This means that Swiss filmmaking is comparatively poorly represented among the contenders for one of the 2024 European Film Awards, according to the list of nominations in the main categories announced by the European Film Academy on Tuesday. However, Switzerland will have the honor of hosting the gala for the 37th European Film Awards for the first time on December 7 at the KKL in Lucerne.
In addition to "Sauvages", a further 14 films have been nominated for the Best European Film award. These are feature films, documentaries and animated films. In October, the European Film Academy decided that they could all be nominated for Best European Film.
Among those in the running for the European Film is the feature film "The Seeds of the Sacred Fig Tree" by Iranian Mohammad Rasoulof, who fled to Germany a few months ago. Or the Palestinian-Norwegian documentary "No Other Land". Or "The Room Next Door" by the Spaniard Pedro Almodóvar. He and his film appear in several categories.
Almodóvar is also in the running for a screenwriter's award and English actress Tilda Swinton is in the running for best European actress for her role in the film. Among the nominated actors are such prominent names as Daniel Craig ("Queer") and Lars Eidiger ("Dying").
The European Film Awards have been presented by the European Film Academy, based in Berlin, since 1988. The event takes place there every two years. In other years, it is the turn of other cities throughout Europe, such as Lucerne this year.
