The TV series "School of Champions" takes its viewers into the world of an elite boarding school for future skiing greats. After "Platzspitzbaby", Swiss actresses Luna Mwezi and Sarah Spale once again play daughter and mother.
The co-production by Schweizer Fernsehen SRF, the Austrian broadcaster ORF and the Bavarian broadcaster BR can be seen from (today) Wednesday on SRF 2 and is also available on the streaming platform Play Suisse. The eight-part series is set in the fictional Austrian village of St. Geis. It was filmed in the Gastein Valley and in Vienna.
The elite boarding school is a training ground of international renown. "Ambition, love, envy and disappointment lie close together at the renowned Austrian Ski Academy Gastein," wrote SRF in a press release on Wednesday.
Tough training sessions, school management under pressure
Ten young talents are accepted each year. The school routine is complemented by tough training sessions. But because the boarding school's graduates regularly dominate professional skiing, young people from all over the world compete for the coveted places every year.
New this year are the quiet George (Moritz Uhl) from Munich, the talented but undisciplined Nikki (Imre Lichtenberger), son of the principal Mark (Jakob Seeböck), the Swiss Nawal (Luna Mwezi), the introverted Luca (Mikka Forcher) from South Tyrol and the local racing talent Dani (Emilia Warenski). But the road to the top is a long one.
And then there is a mysterious death. Did the young pupil Paul (Nikolaus Lessky) take his own life because of the pressure to perform? His parents put pressure on the school management. In addition, principal and former Olympic champion Mark Auer is fighting for funding for the elite school.
The first season was filmed from October 2022 to March 2023, with a Christmas break. Filming for the second season began last November and is scheduled to be completed by April. The directors are Dominik Hartl ("Beautiful Girl", "Tatort: Azra") and Johanna Moder ("High Performance - Mandarinen lügen nicht", "Waren einmal Revoluzzer"). The screenplay was written by Samuel Schultschik.
