Ukraine should be able to receive Swiss armaments indirectly in future. The National Council's Security Policy Committee (SIK-N) adopted its proposals for an amendment to the War Material Act on Tuesday, but by a very narrow majority.
The SIK-N passed the bill by 10 votes to 10, 4 abstentions and with a casting vote by President Priska Seiler Graf (SP/ZH). Seiler Graf announced the decision to the media in Bern on Tuesday.
The War Material Act currently prohibits the transfer of exported Swiss armaments to Ukraine. The majority of the committee believes that the War Material Act needs to be relaxed, said Seiler Graf.
The current regulation, with which Switzerland prevents countries that purchase war material from helping in Ukraine, is met with great incomprehension. The minority, on the other hand, considered the timing - changing the rules in the middle of a war - to be bad. It also had concerns about neutrality, said Seiler Graf.
