Tuition fees for foreigners at the Federal Institutes of Technology in Zurich and Lausanne are to rise. After the National Council, this is also the view of the responsible Council of States committee. However, it is proposing a smaller increase to the Council.

Tuition fees are being discussed as part of the debates on the ERI Dispatch for 2025 to 2028. In the summer session, the National Council decided that students with a foreign baccalaureate should in future pay at least three times as much in tuition fees as students with a Swiss baccalaureate.

The Committee for Science, Education and Culture of the Council of States (WBK-S) is now only requesting an increase of "at least twice as much". It decided this by 6 votes to 5, as reported by the parliamentary services on Tuesday.

A first minority wanted the same increase as the National Council. A second minority wants to give the ETH Board the option of increasing the fees for foreign students by a factor of three to five. A third minority wants to retain the current law and leave the setting of fees to the ETHs.

The Council of States Committee unanimously approved the 16 sub-proposals of the ERI Dispatch. The consultations are not yet complete. They are to be continued in August.
