Commission wants to relax wolf protection

The Environment Committee of the Council of States wants less protection for wolves in Switzerland. It is also calling for faster issuing of shooting permits for problem wolves.
At its meeting on Friday, the Council of States Committee for the Environment, Spatial Planning and Energy (Urek-S) decided by nine votes to three to submit a committee motion on the wolf. It is calling on the Federal Council to downgrade the protection of wolves under the Bern Convention from "strictly protected" to "protected". In addition, the Federal Council should examine whether the cantons can designate wolf-free zones.
The Urek-S adopted a motion by the same proportion of votes calling for faster issuing of shooting permits for problem wolves. Easier access to financial aid for livestock protection is also included in the motion.
At the end of September, the EU member states also spoke out in favor of relaxing the protection of wolves. To this end, the Council of the EU requested an amendment to the Bern Convention of the Council of Europe. The aim is also to downgrade the status from "strictly protected" to "protected".
