Florian Wiegand, concert director of the Salzburg Festival, becomes artistic director of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.
With Wiegand, the orchestra is gaining an artistic director who can optimally cover the spectrum between the audience at home and the international media and touring business, said Munich's Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter after the city council confirmed the appointment. The 50-year-old will take up his new post in September 2025, followed a year later by the designated chief conductor Lahav Shani.
Wiegand is looking forward to his new position with the municipal ensemble: "It has a lot to do with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra under Sergiu Celibidache that I came to classical music as a teenager. To now be able to help shape the future of this wonderful orchestra fills me with inspiration and humility," he said about his future role. He plans to be in Munich again and again as early as the fall.
Wiegand was born in Munich and studied cultural management. He has been concert director in Salzburg since 2012 and teaches at the University of Zurich. He won the directorship in Munich in a multi-stage selection process.
