On Tuesday, the Oberhasli power plants submitted a concession application to the Canton of Bern for the enlargement of Lake Grimsel. The two dams Seeuferegg and Spitallamm are to be raised by 23 meters.
Specifically, Kraftwerke Oberhasli is applying for an amendment and supplement to its overall concession for the use of hydropower in Oberhasli. The Bernese cantonal parliament is responsible for this adjustment, as the power plants wrote in a press release on Tuesday.
By raising the dam walls, the capacity of the Grimsel reservoir, which has been in existence for almost 100 years, is to be increased from the current 94 million cubic meters to 170 million cubic meters. The energy content will increase from 270 to 510 gigawatt hours.
The raising of the Grimsel dam has a long and controversial history.
