The Vatican thriller "Conclave" by Austrian-Swiss director Edward Berger has received eleven nominations at the Critics Choice Awards, making it one of the top contenders. Only the film adaptation of the Broadway musical "Wicked" has as many chances of winning. With this success in Hollywood, "Conclave" is still on course for an Oscar.
"Conclave" is one of ten nominees in the top category "Best Film" at the Critics' Choice Awards. There are also trophies for the ensemble cast, lead actor Ralph Fiennes, supporting actress Isabella Rossellini, direction (Berger), film music (Volker Bertelmann), costume design (Lisy Christl) and adapted screenplay, cinematography, set design and editing.
The film about intrigue and power struggles during the election of a new pope was also recently nominated for six Golden Globes.
Berger, who is Swiss through his mother and Austrian through his father, is thus back on the road to success in Hollywood. In 2023, his literary adaptation "Nothing New in the West" won four Oscars - for Best International Film, Cinematography, Production Design and for the score by Volker Bertelmann.
The nomination of "September 5" by Tim Fehlbaum is also a success for Switzerland. The Swiss director and screenwriter's drama about the 1972 Olympic bombing in Munich is nominated in the Original Screenplay category and for Best Editing (Hansjörg Weissbrich).
Nominations for "Dune: Part Two" and "Emilia Pérez"
After "Conclave" and "Wicked", there are ten nominations each for Denis Villeneuve's science fiction drama "Dune: Part Two" and for the musical film "Emilia Pérez" by Frenchman Jacques Audiard, which recently won at the European Film Awards in Lucerne.
With almost 600 members, the largest critics' association for film and television in the USA and Canada is behind the Critics' Choice Awards. The awards gala for the 30th edition is scheduled to take place on January 12 in Santa Monica, California.
Television productions are also honored at the Critics Choice Awards. The literary series adaptation "Shogun" leads with six nominations. "Abbott Elementary", "Disclaimer", "Hacks", "The Diplomat", "The Penguin" and "What We Do in the Shadows", among others, also have several chances of winning. Stars such as Jeff Bridges, Kevin Kline, Cate Blanchett, Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman have also been nominated for TV roles.
