The Swiss Confederation will support the Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross with CHF 56 million in 2024 for its missions in crisis countries. The contribution is intended to cover humanitarian needs in armed conflicts, the Federal Council announced on Wednesday.

In this way, Switzerland is supporting the Red Cross (ICRC) in fulfilling its mandate, particularly in the area of protecting prisoners and protecting people from enforced disappearance, the statement continued.

Due to the increasing number of conflicts worldwide, more and more people are dependent on humanitarian aid. The ICRC's funding crisis last year resulted in significant cuts at the same time and forced the organization to mobilize additional funds.

The ICRC adopted a new strategy to strengthen its core mandate and improve financial monitoring. In August 2023, the Federal Council granted the ICRC an additional contribution of CHF 50 million.

Despite all the challenges, the ICRC has succeeded in consolidating its status as an impartial, neutral and independent organization and as a key player in armed conflicts and other violent situations, the Federal Council announced on Wednesday. The Red Cross continues to operate in places where other actors have no access.

The federal government is also supporting the World Food Program (WFP) in the area of foreign aid with a contribution of CHF 39 million in the current year, as the Federal Council also announced on Wednesday. The WFP is the world's largest humanitarian organization in the global fight against hunger. According to the national government, it is one of Switzerland's most important partners in international cooperation.
