The Confederation wants to support recurring international sporting events such as World Cups with financial contributions from 2025. The Federal Council approved a corresponding amendment to the Sports Promotion Ordinance on Wednesday.

In accordance with the Sports Promotion Act and the Sports Promotion Ordinance, the federal government can support international sporting events in Switzerland with a financial contribution. The condition is that the events are of European or global importance and that the cantons make an appropriate contribution to the costs, as the Federal Council also announced.

The federal government already supports international sporting events such as the 2008 European Men's Football Championship and the 2025 European Women's Football Championship with financial and in-kind support. However, funding for regularly recurring international sporting events such as Ski World Cup events has not been planned to date.

Aid could be lower in 2025

However, the Federal Council went on to say that these events are important drivers for sport, tourism and the economy. They are "important image carriers with potentially lasting effects on the perception of the country that go beyond sport". From 2025, event organizers will therefore be able to submit an annual application for support, which will be reviewed by the responsible Federal Office of Sport (Baspo), the statement continued.

In June 2023, Parliament approved a commitment credit of CHF 29 million for one-off international sporting events in the years 2025-2029 as well as a commitment credit of CHF 25 million for recurring events in the same period.

Against the backdrop of the tight financial situation, the Federal Council decided to only make four million francs available for 2025 if the Federal Council's current review of tasks and subsidies does not lead to measures in the area of recurring sporting events.
