Members of the Congolese diaspora in Switzerland have demonstrated in Geneva for the rights of their compatriots in Africa. The event, which was attended by around 600 people on Saturday, was peaceful.

The protesters condemned all forms of aggression, oppression, discrimination and abuse that overshadow the lives of millions of people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (also known as Zaire or Congo-Kinshasa), especially in the east of the country.

The province of North Kivu in the east of the country has been in conflict since the end of 2021 between the M23 ("March 23 Movement" - a Tutsi-majority rebellion), which is supported by units of the Rwandan army, and the Congolese army, which is linked in particular to armed groups of so-called "patriots".

The M23 has conquered large parts of the territory of this province. The capital Goma, a metropolitan area with around two million inhabitants, is currently practically cut off from all land access to the interior in the north and west.
