Consumer sentiment in Switzerland weakened slightly in October compared to the previous month. The monthly consumer sentiment index compiled by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco) stood at -37 points after -34 points in September.

However, consumer sentiment is thus well above the level of a year ago, as Seco reported on Friday. In October 2023, the index stood at just under -53 points, marking the lowest point in the statistics to date.

The sub-indices 'Expected economic development', 'Past financial situation', 'Expected financial situation' and 'Time for major purchases' were above the previous year's level last month.

Since the beginning of 2024, the consumer sentiment index has been based on monthly surveys conducted by Seco instead of the previous quarterly surveys. These are conducted continuously using online questionnaires, with 2649 people taking part last month in German, French or Italian. A value below zero indicates a deterioration in consumer sentiment.
