The 28-year-old writer Dana Vowinckel ("Gewässer im Ziplock") has been awarded this year's German Business Prize for Literature.
This was announced on Wednesday in Berlin by the Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft, which awards the 20,000 euro prize for outstanding young voices in contemporary literature since 1953. "With Dana Vowinckel, we are honoring an authentic young voice in contemporary literature," said the jury, explaining its decision. "With her debut novel "Gewässer im Ziplock", she creates access to themes such as identity, home, physicality and growing up."
With clear and touching language, the author draws multi-layered and memorable characters. According to the jury, Vowinckel describes "the depths and contrasts of a highly complex family with a strong sense of identity, set against the backdrop of family history in Chicago, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Berlin". At the center of her story is Margarita, a teenager growing up in Berlin, the child of a single Israeli father and an American mother.
According to its own statements, the Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft is primarily involved in promoting young talent. Since 1953, the Kulturkreis has honored up-and-coming talent in the fields of music, visual arts, literature and architecture. Previous winners include artists such as Georg Baselitz and authors such as Heinrich Böll, Ingeborg Bachmann, Günter Grass and Robert Menasse.
