Basel-based artist Deborah Joyce Holman has been awarded the Prix Mobilière 2024. She was nominated by Laurence Schmidlin, Director of the Valais Art Museum. She was awarded the prize on Thursday at the Artgenève art fair.
Holman deals with the representation of people of color and queerness in society and popular culture. The Swiss Mobiliar insurance company announced the award on Thursday.
The way Holman works with "bodies, senses and language is thought-provoking - be it in her paintings, videos or installations", Schmidlin was quoted as saying in the press release.
In addition to Holman, six other female artists were nominated for the award. This year, all the nominees are women: Ishita Chakraborty, Natacha Donzé, Johanna Hullár, Judith Kakon, Davide-Christelle Sanvee and Hannah Weinberger. They all represented the contemporary art scene in Switzerland with their artistic work.
The seven artists are now exhibiting their works at Artgenève (until January 28), making them accessible to a wide audience.
The Prix Mobilière is an award sponsored by the private Mobiliar insurance company. It has been awarded since 1996, first by Providentia and since 2005 under its current name. It is endowed with CHF 30,000.
