According to a survey commissioned by SRG, fewer Swiss people are using social media compared to last year. According to the survey, the lower usage increases people's sense of happiness.
The survey was conducted by the JRC Bern research institute. Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) published the results on its news platform SRF News on Thursday.
In 2023, 77% of those surveyed said they would use social media on a daily basis, according to the report. In 2024, the figure had fallen to 70 percent.
7% of Swiss people stated that they do not use social media such as Facebook, Whatsapp, YouTube or X. This figure has risen compared to the previous year. The trend towards less use is in line with the general unease that has been spreading around social media for some time.
Social media provided one-sided information
Around four out of five respondents were of the opinion that social media provide one-sided information and divide our society. It was also said that the platforms hardly fulfill the promise of being social these days. In the survey, almost half of people said they would be happier if they spent less time on social media.
The results come from the representative survey "How are you, Switzerland?", which was conducted for the second time after 2023. A total of 51,182 Swiss residents took part between May and June 2024.
