The outflow from the practically full lakes on the edge of the Jura will be increased. This was decided on Thursday by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and the cantons bordering Lakes Biel, Murten and Neuchâtel together with the Aare cantons downstream of Lake Biel.
This will create space for any new precipitation, according to a joint communiqué. The coming days are expected to be dry. However, rivers and lakes are well filled and the soil is saturated. The longer-term weather forecasts are uncertain.
The cantons of Bern, Neuchâtel, Fribourg, Vaud, Solothurn and Aargau have therefore decided, together with the federal government, to allow more water to flow out of the Port BE weir with immediate effect. The Aare downstream of Lake Biel will therefore carry even more water in the coming days.
"The responsible authorities are acting in the public interest," the communiqué states. The option of precautionary lowering was created for the Jura lakes after the 2007 floods.
