Three more transport and storage casks, each containing 69 spent fuel assemblies, have been transported from the Leibstadt nuclear power plant in the canton of Aargau to the Würenlingen interim storage facility a few kilometers away. Approved trucks were used for the transfer by road.
The transports have been taking place since September, as Zwilag AG announced on Thursday. After the containers arrived in Würenlingen, extensive checks were carried out in terms of radiation protection and leak tightness.
The casks approved by the authorities were then stored in the cask storage hall. All transportation and storage work was supervised by the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (Ensi) and the International Atomic Energy Agency. All national and international regulations and requirements were met.
Zwilag is a public limited company of the Swiss nuclear power plant operating companies. The share capital is divided in proportion to the thermal output of the nuclear power plants.
