Accompanied by a massive police presence, the trial in a double murder in the Albanian drug milieu began on Monday in Basel. The defendant is accused of shooting two men together with an accomplice seven years ago.
At the beginning of the trial, the court rejected the defense's request that the defendant's handcuffs be removed during the trial. Dorrit Schleiminger, president of the court, said that the shackles would allow the accused sufficient freedom of movement to take notes.
On the evening of March 9, 2017, two men entered Café 56 on Basel's Erlenmattstrasse with their firearms drawn. Within a short space of time, five shots were fired at three of the people in the café. Two of the men, aged 28 and 40, died, while a third survived with serious injuries.
The trial before the Basel Criminal Court is scheduled to last four days.
