Driver crashes his car into the Aare in Thun and dies

A driver crashed his vehicle into the River Aare in Thun early on Sunday morning. He died in the accident.
The accident was reported shortly before 5.50 a.m., according to the Bern cantonal police on Sunday. According to the report, the car first collided with the side of the kerb on Frutigenstrasse, then drove over the traffic circle and then broke through the railing of the Aare.
The car plunged several meters into the riverbed. The driver died at the scene of the accident. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The Aarestrasse remained closed for several hours due to the complex recovery work. In addition to the police, special services, an ambulance team, specialists from the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the University of Bern and the Thun fire department were also deployed.
