The 62-year-old Flixbus driver from Italy, who was due to stand trial in Zurich on Wednesday for involuntary manslaughter, did not show up. He had himself excused for psychological reasons. The trial began nevertheless.

Instead of questioning the accused, the court began directly with the lawyers' pleas. The accused's lawyer is present in court. Some of the 19 private plaintiffs are also represented by a lawyer.

The Italian is accused of misjudging the snow and ice conditions. He is said to have been traveling more than twice as fast as would have been appropriate given the weather. The Flixbus from Milan crashed almost unchecked into a concrete wall at the end of Sihlhochstrasse in the early morning of December 16, 2018. Two people died. Dozens were injured.
