The Bündner Kunstmuseum in Chur, Switzerland is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the early works of the world-renowned artist Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). The exhibition, titled "Alberto Giacometti. Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man", is the first of its kind to focus on the artist's early works. It features 160 works of art, mostly paintings, as well as 40 documents such as postcards, letters and photos, many of which have never been seen before.
The exhibition begins with works from when Giacometti was 12 years old and covers his time in Paris in the 1920s. It is also a tribute to the late Bernese art collector and auctioneer Eberhard W. Kornfeld, who would have turned 100 this September.
The exhibition is divided into several sections, featuring works depicting members of Giacometti's family, landscapes and still lifes. Giacometti's passion for art was evident from a young age, and he began painting and drawing in his hometown of Bergell and later in Schiers in the Prättigau. He also spent time in Geneva and Rome, and was heavily influenced by ancient Egyptian sculptures.
The exhibition does not feature Giacometti's later, more famous, sculptures, as he only began to focus on this art form after the Second World War. The exhibition runs until 19 November and is accompanied by a 300-page catalogue.
