After India and Spain, Switzerland is the third guest country at the Marché du film in Cannes, which takes place on the fringes of the festival. Culture Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider will climb the legendary red-carpeted steps in front of a crowd of photographers in a tuxedo on Thursday.

The Federal Councillor from Jura is not traveling to Cannes alone: she is accompanied by representatives of the Federal Office of Culture (FOC), including its Director Carine Bachmann.

They will visit the Marché du film and meet with representatives of the film industry and French-language co-productions. A large delegation of Swiss filmmakers, producers, representatives of television stations and institutions is also expected - almost 300 people according to Swiss Films, the promotion agency for Swiss film.

Intersection of cultures

"At the crossroads of cultures and languages, Switzerland occupies an important place on the European and international film market. Whether feature films, documentaries or animations, filmmaking reflects the diversity of our country," emphasized Baume-Schneider.

According to Baume-Schneider, the obligation for streaming platforms to invest in series, films or international co-productions in Switzerland, which has been in force since the beginning of the year, will strengthen the competitiveness of filmmaking and the international visibility of Switzerland, particularly in Europe.

Movie marketplace

In addition to the Swiss Films stand in the Village International, Swiss companies from the field of innovation will present products from the audiovisual sector in the Swiss Hub of the Palais des Festivals. Around 30 Swiss organizations are actively participating in this edition.

Under the auspices of Swiss Films, several Swiss filmmakers will unveil new projects as part of the industry programs. Exhibitors and institutions from the Swiss film industry will take part in panel discussions and conferences.

Pitch from nine publishers

Among the numerous Swiss stands at the film market, "Shoot the book" with Pro Helvetia deserves a special mention: Nine publishers from three language regions of Switzerland were selected to present their literary works to international filmmakers in a pitching session.

On the festive side, the Locarno Film Festival will host a reception on Thursday and Swiss Films will host a Swiss evening at the Plage de la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs on the Croisette the next day.

The 77th edition of the Marché takes place from May 14 to 22 and, with over 14,000 participants, is considered the largest international gathering of filmmakers. The actual Cannes Film Festival opens on the same day, but lasts a little longer, until May 25.
