Empa scientists Maksym Kovalenko and Zhanyun Wang are among the most cited researchers in the world. They were awarded the title of "Highly Cited Researcher" by the analysis company "Clarivate".

The list includes the scientists whose publications were cited most frequently, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) announced on Friday. The list includes almost 6900 researchers.

Kovalenko, who holds a professorship for inorganic materials at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, is working on the development of novel functional materials for energy generation and storage, Empa wrote. He has received various awards for his research on luminescent nanoparticles. He is on the list for the seventh time in a row.

Wang is a scientist in Empa's "Technology and Society" laboratory. He focuses primarily on understanding the life cycles and risks of anthropogenic chemicals and materials in the technosphere and in the natural environment. With his research, he wants to strengthen the interface between science and politics in order to advance the management of chemicals and waste towards a sustainable circular economy. Wang is on the list for the second time.
