According to the nuclear supervisory authority Ensi, a total of 22 incidents relevant to nuclear safety occurred at the three Swiss nuclear power plants Gösgen, Beznau I and Leibstadt last year. This is five fewer reportable incidents than in 2022.
The Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (Ensi) announced on Thursday that all nuclear facilities had complied with the safety requirements in accordance with the legal provisions. The protection of the population and personnel from radioactive substances was guaranteed at all times.
Eight incidents were recorded at the Gösgen nuclear power plant in the canton of Solothurn and seven incidents each at the Leibstadt and Beznau I nuclear power plants in the canton of Aargau. Two further incidents concerned the nuclear facilities of the Paul Scherrer Institute in the canton of Aargau.
According to the nuclear supervisory authority, none of the reportable incidents endangered the safety of people or the environment. The year passed without an incident at the Beznau 2 nuclear power plant and the Mühleberg nuclear power plant, which is being dismantled, as well as at the central interim storage facility for nuclear waste in Würenlingen AG.
The only reactor emergency shutdown occurred in May at the Leibstadt nuclear power plant. The reason for the automatic emergency shutdown after the annual overhaul was a low water level in the reactor, as reported by Ensi.
Releases of radioactive substances from nuclear facilities to the environment were below the limits in the 2023 operating year. According to the Ensi report, no unauthorized discharges from Swiss nuclear facilities were registered.
