Heavy thunderstorms swept across parts of the canton of Zurich in particular late on Sunday evening. Around 230 emergency calls were received within four hours, as a spokesperson for the cantonal operations center told the Keystone-SDA news agency.

The district of Affoltern was particularly affected, as a spokesperson for Zurich Protection and Rescue said early on Monday morning. No significant damage was initially reported.

According to the information provided, there were also a particularly large number of call-outs on Lake Zurich in Wädenswil, Richterswil and the Zurich Oberland. Due to the large number of emergency calls, especially between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., more employees were called out. According to the spokesperson, experience has shown that most of the operations during such storms involve flooded cellars or the securing of property and branches.

In Wädenswil, 43 millimetres of rain fell within 20 minutes, as the weather service of the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss) announced on Platform X early Monday morning. Gusts of wind with a speed of 87 kilometers per hour were measured in Schmerikon SG. In Küsnacht ZH, MeteoSwiss registered 122 near lightning flashes.
