Solar cells, wind turbines and heat pumps: the EU Parliament is paving the way for greater promotion of climate-neutral technologies. MEPs voted in favor of the "net zero industry law" in Strasbourg on Thursday.

The aim is to simplify approval procedures, for example, so that more investment can flow into climate-friendly technologies. In future, the EU's annual production capacity for CO2-free technologies should cover at least 15 percent of global demand.

Up to now, the EU has largely had to import technology for clean technologies in order to achieve its climate targets. Now the production of solar systems and wind turbines, for example, is to be increasingly brought back to Europe. This will also help the EU achieve its goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2050.

"To achieve all our economic, climate and energy policy goals, we need industry in Europe. This law is the first step towards making our market fit for this purpose," said Conservative MEP Christian Ehler, who was responsible for the project in Parliament.

FDP industrial policy spokesman Michael Kauch, on the other hand, criticized: "The additional costs incurred will delay climate-neutral investments and, in view of tight public budgets, mean that fewer projects can be implemented. Well-intentioned, but bad for the environment in the end."

The EU member states still have to approve the project, but this is considered a formality.
