Experience a hero’s journey with AI accompaniment at the Aarau City Museum

The Aarau City Museum is dedicating an exhibition to heroines and idols. An artificial intelligence accompanies the museum visit, as co-curator Laura Schuppli said in an interview with the Keystone-SDA news agency.
"Geliebt, Gelobt, Gehypt" is the name of the exhibition, which explores the significance of heroism and role models. "It's not just about individual people," says Laura Schuppli. It's also about the changes in heroic figures and their status in society.
"Heroic figures are a mirror of society," says the curator. In the past, they were war heroes; today, collectives are more likely to act as heroic figures. "Although some say that we are now living in a post-heroic age," says the curator. Schuppli designed the exhibition together with Laura Aellig.
The show begins in the children's room. "People often don't have an answer to the question of who their heroes are," said the curator. But especially as a child, everyone had such a figure. The exhibition features images of Pipi Longstocking, Adolf Ogi and Taylor Swift. And anti-heroes.
Hero's journey using AI
An artificial intelligence (AI) guides visitors through the show. "Everyone can experience their own hero's journey," said Schuppli. The first device, which is activated using a badge, is given a hero's name. The story continues from station to station.
The AI speaks dialect, and at the end a poem or haiku is generated about the experience. It is the first AI application in Switzerland to accompany an exhibition in this form.
The exhibition also looks at the staging of heroism - be it with home stories from magazines or with social media, where everyone can stage themselves. Space is also given to the fans. Not only are photos of the cheering crowds shown, the exhibition also leads past a fan store and highlights aspects of fan culture in football and pop stars.
"Geliebt, Gelobt, Gehypt" runs from April 27, 2024 to April 27, 2025.
