The Swiss Farmers' Union is recommending that the Swiss electorate vote yes to the energy decree, which will be put to the vote on June 9. In doing so, it is taking a different position to the SVP, which is traditionally strong among farmers and rejects the decree.
As the farmers' association SBC announced on Friday, it was the association's 106-member Chamber of Agriculture that adopted the slogan. It is regarded as the parliament of the farmers' association.
When asked, SBC Director Martin Rufer said that there were two main reasons for farmers to vote yes to the energy decree: agriculture has a great interest in a secure power supply. Having sufficient electricity is important for livestock farms, for example.
In addition, agriculture sees itself as part of the solution when it comes to energy, Rufer continued. Many farmers could produce electricity themselves.
At the end of March, the Swiss People's Party (SVP) voted no to the energy package decree. The Bernese cantonal section recently deviated from this and decided to vote Yes. At the beginning of March, the St. Gallen SVP section also voted in favor of the energy package decree, which is supported by SVP Federal Councillor Albert Rösti.
Several members of the National Council and Council of States from the SVP, including the new SVP President Marcel Dettling, sit on the SBC Chamber of Agriculture.
