It is important for Switzerland to start negotiations with the EU before the European elections. FDFA State Secretary Alexandre Fasel explained that the previous EU Commission could pass on negotiations that had already begun to the new one. However, it could no longer start new topics.
In previous statements on the negotiations with the EU, the importance of the timeline was always emphasized. As Fasel, who heads the interdepartmental working group coordinating Switzerland's work with the negotiations with the EU, said, it is important to start the negotiations with the current EU Commission.
Negotiations will therefore begin before a possible new composition of the Commission after the elections. This would guarantee continuity, as the Swiss negotiating delegation would be sitting opposite those already involved in the exploratory talks. This is in Switzerland's interests.
