The FDP is calling for stricter controls at the Swiss border and in areas close to the border. It has called on the Federal Council to follow Germany's example and detain and deport asylum seekers who have already been registered elsewhere at the southern border with Italy.
The situation in the cantons and municipalities is already tense, the party announced on Tuesday evening. This should "under no circumstances be exacerbated" by Germany's new measures, as asylum seekers rejected by Germany would remain in Switzerland.
The FPD also announced that it would continue to adhere to the Schengen and Dublin agreements, in contrast to the SVP, "which wants to terminate our participation in the European asylum system and plunge Switzerland into immediate asylum chaos". Although the European asylum system has weaknesses, Switzerland still benefits from it in the end. However, Federal Councillor Jans should not "follow the European rules more slavishly" than even EU member state Germany does, the press release continued.
The German Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser (SPD), ordered temporary controls at all German borders on Monday in order to reduce the number of unauthorized entries. The additional controls are to begin on September 16 and initially last for six months. Stationary controls have already been in place at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland since October 2023. These have been repeatedly extended and will currently run until December 15.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described Germany's announcement to tighten its migration policy as "unacceptable" on Tuesday. The European Commission called on Berlin to take "proportionate" measures that should remain "exceptional".
