The FDP could find itself in need of an explanation after the next elections: "If we can't make gains in four years and the center remains as strong, then it will be difficult to argue why the FDP has two seats," says party president Thierry Burkart.

"The fact that we are behind the center in terms of seats is a fact, even if we are still slightly stronger in terms of voter share," said the FDP president in an interview with Tamedia published on Saturday. "We have to win the next election if we want to keep both seats."

However, he clarified that any change would require a vacancy in the Federal Council. As party president, he could not decide on the resignation of a Federal Councillor from his own ranks.

The centrist party wants to take on more government responsibility in the medium term, as it announced on Friday. However, it is not yet seeking a second seat in the upcoming general elections to the Federal Council on December 13.
